Scene 4
Where: Anna's classroom in school
Who: Anna, Alice, Guy Friend (temporary name is X)
What: Anna is sad to find out that she is the adopted child, turns to guy friend for comfort.
Alice feels bad that Anna is sad, regrets overhearing.
Anna decides to study overseas,(got scholarship)as an excuse to leave this family as she feels that she does not belong
(Hands folded on the table and head resting on it)
Anna: “…Hey X, how would you feel if one day, you found out you were really adopted, and your parents told you they weren’t your parents, and your family isn’t your real family at all?”
(calmly) X: “It would be difficult to accept, but I would try hard to find out my true identity. I also wouldn’t hate my adopted family, because if it weren’t for them, I wouldn’t be who I am today, right?”
Anna: “Just what would you say? How would you act? I don’t know how to face them anymore, after everything that has been revealed, I don’t know what is real, what I’ve been believing, the life I’ve been living for the past 14 years, or my real identity.”
(gently) X: “Keep your emotions in control, reality may be harsher than it seems, but time and maturity will enable you to understand why your adopted family and your real family did what they did.”
(interrupting) Anna: “Living a lie for 14 years… You don’t understand! You don’t know how it’s like, for everything right under your feet to crumble just like that, in an instant, everything’s gone. You don’t know how it’s like to know that you’re who you are, but then again, you’re really not. (voice breaks)I wanted to believe I was just being led on, but it hurts, how it makes everything perfectly clear now, why mother was always biased, and how Alice must have felt. Just who am I? They lied to me! How can I ever trust them again? Who can I trust? Just a week ago they were my family! (break down and start crying)”
(offers tissue and pats her on the shoulder)X: “Many times in our lives, things don’t go our way, the trick is to accept reality, don’t worry about the future yet, take one step at a time.”
Anna: “Naturally, you stick with me through thick and thin time and again, thanks.”
X: “Of course, that’s what friends are for! By the way, I’ll cheer you up with some good news! Remember the scholarship we applied for? The news were posted and we got in! The trip to Canada is in less than a month, so you have to decide quickly.”
Meanwhile, Alice is in her bedroom at home sitting on her bed.
(pacing around the room)
Alice: “P… My head hurts… What have I just done? Anna must be really hurt, and she must be feeling terrible, and all I’ve done is make her feel worse! Oh, why did I overhear the conversation? If only I had not been so eager and pressed mother…”(ends with her sitting on the floor, leaning against something with her head down)
