hi! Li Yi and I discussed about the script and edited it.
This is what we came up with so far...

Scene: ______

Where: Master Bedroom
Who: Alice, Richard, Malanie
What: Alice overheard parents’ (Richard and Malanie) conversation about an adopted child and she suspects herself to be the adopted child.
-Richard and Malanie quarelling about Richard leaving the birth certificates of their daughters lying around. Malonie is scared that the truth would be revealed should the girls see the birth certificates.
-Alice wants her father (Richard) to sign her report book and overheard her parents’ conversation, leading to the misunderstanding.
-Upon hearing the word “adoption”, she thought that it was herself who was adopted and left the scene before the actual truth was revealed (Anna was the adopted child).
-Anna flashback about her happy past.
Dialogue:
(Richard returns from work, remove blazer and hand to Malanie, who refused to take it)
Malanie: Do you have any idea where I found these birth certificates?
Richard: By the table, I guess.
Malanie: Crap, they are lying there, on the floor!
Richard: Did I leave them there? Sorry! (Pick BCs up, Malanie remains quiet looking frustrated with arms crossed.)
(Alice walks to Master Bedroom with her report card.)
Alice (to herself): Daddy’s finally back. I should let him sign my report card. He won’t compare me to Anna, unlike Ma.
(Overhears quarrel, leans head towards door)
Malanie: Enough! I have enough of your stupid blunders! What would happen if they discover these certs? They would know that they are not biological sisters! Do you know how sad Alice would be?
(Alice walks away)
Richard: Fantastic, I get blamed for everything! Argh, I just want to forget all this.
Malanie: Why, what geniuses we are! Why did we adopt Anna in the first place? If only we knew Alice would come into our lives sooner or later! (Sighs)
(Spotlight on Alice)
Alice: How can this be possible? Anna and I are not biological sisters?
But we were so happy together! (Flashback: Children playing, laughter.)
(Left-back light on with small Alice, Anna and friends playing)
Small Alice: Let’s play London Bridge! (softer than Alice, but seem like shouting to friends at the same time…)
Alice: Am I the adopted one? Is that why Mum always praise Anna?
(Right-back light on with Malanie, Anna runs towards mother, who pats her on her head. Alice stops playing and watches enviously. Meanwhile, blackout on Big Alice and she leaves stage)
Small Alice: I can do as well (solemnly) (leaves stage)
(Big Alice enters the spotlight previously taken by small Alice and watch enviously as the spotlight on Malanie and Anna dims and they leave stage.)

Who? Alice, Anna, Kelly, Holly
(On all lights. Kelly and Holly enters the stage)
Kelly: Alice! How are you?
Alice: Fine. (Forces out a smile)
Holly: Do you want to join us for shopping this Saturday? It would be fun!
Alice: I’m not sure. I might not be free.
Holly: How about Sunday? Would you be free then?
Alice: I… I have tuition. Sorry guys. (Stammers, undecided)
(Anna enters scene)
Kelly: Hey Anna, are you free this Saturday?
Anna: I’ve the whole afternoon free! Why?
Kelly: I’m going to the mall with Holly! Want to join us?
Anna: Sure! Boy do I need to get a good break!
Kelly: Great!
Holly: Anna’s going, are you going? (Looks at Alice)
Alice: Look, I'm really busy. Bye. (Leaves)
Anna: Alice! Why didn’t you wait for me this morning? I thought we always go to school together.
Alice: Err…I had to complete some project. I’ve really got to go now! (Hurriedly leaves stage)
Holly: What's wrong with her? Is she really that busy lately?
Anna: I have no idea. (Disturbed by Alice’s attempt to avoid her)
Kelly: Never mind, let's go back to class now. Come on!

Scene: ______________

Where: In Alice’s bedroom
Who: Alice
What: Alice having an emotional struggle in her room and fears for her future.
(Blackout and spotlight on Alice, front-right)
Alice: How I wish I can go back to the past. Life is really torturous now, I can’t seem to face Anna. Whenever I see her, I get a cacophony of emotions. I’m not sure if I should be angry, be jealous or just treat her the way I used to.
(Confused) If mum isn’t mum, then who is? Why would she want to abandon me in the first place? What about dad? Most importantly, who am I?
And what if mum decides to send me back to the orphanage?
(Back-left spotlight on scene: Nurse trying to stop struggling ‘young Alice’ from leaving the orphanage, while Malanie and Richard leave. Other children in orphanage unwilling to accept stranger and cowards away from her)
How would I be living? Lonely? Sad? I would really miss my old life. (Pause, while spotlight on orphanage scene dims.)
Urg…fate has a funny way of playing with my life, doesn’t it? (Sarcastic) One moment it’s bright, the next it’s dark.
Why can’t I just be like anyone else, have a happy and complete family? Life sucks.

Scene:

Where: At the dining room
Who: Richard, Melanie, Anna and Alice
What: Alice rudely demands for the truth from her mother regarding her true birth. Unbeknownst to her, Alice was not the one adopted but it was Anna. Melanie could not take the pressure anymore and blurts out the truth in her which she has been hiding secretly for years. This resulted in chaos in the family.
(Left spotlight on, with dining table scene and Malanie enters the stage)
Malenie: Alice, Anna, dinner's ready! (Preparing dinner)
(Alice walks glumly towards the dining table, while front-right spotlight dims. Then, all lights on)
Anna: Beef, eggs and salad, great! Even better, dad's with us tonight!
Alice: (hesitates) Can I ask you something, Mum?
Malenie: Darling, what is it? You seemed troubled! (Looked concerned)
Richard: Eat your dinner first, Alice.
Alice: Dad, there’s this night, that…that I accidentally overheard your conversation with mum, and… and mum said that one of us is adopted.
Malenie: Goodness! Isn't the beef tasty? You should really try one, Alice.
Alice: Am I the one adopted?
Malanie: Let’s tuck in shall we? (Trying hard to pretend to be oblivious to what Alice says.)
Alice: Who cares about the food! Who is adopted? Is it me or Anna? How can you keep the truth from me! Who are my real parents? (Slams her knife and fork on the table and stands up)
Richard: Insolent girl! How can you speak to your mother in this kind of manner? Apologies to your mother immediately! ( Bangs his fists on the table and stands up)
Malenie: Jesus, what is happening? Richard sit down; and Alice, (pauses for a few seconds) No one is adopted. (Attempts to give an assuring smile)
Anna: Alice, hush! Can’t you see that mum is troubled over your harsh words? Who told you that one of us is adopted?
(Family pretends to ignore the interruption and continues eating. but Alice stares furiously at Malanie, Malanie finally gives in.)
Malenie: It is not that I refused to tell you…It’s just that… the truth is too hard to bear… you wouldn’t want to know…( moves away from her daughter, leans her head on the wall) ….I can’t tell…I can’t tell…I can’t tell…( mumbled softly)( Stumbles back to her room)
Richard: Perhaps it’s time I revealed the truth, Anna is the adopted one… she is the adopted one…not Alice… (Walks hurriedly off stage to comfort Malanie)
Alice: Oh what have I done? What have I done? ( Buries her head in her hands, and leaves the stage)
(Anna remains at the dining alone, dumbfounded and confused)

Scene 4
Where: Anna's classroom in school
Who: Anna, Alice, Keith
What: Anna is sad to find out that she is the adopted child, turns to Keith for comfort.
Alice feels bad that Anna is sad, regrets overhearing.
Anna decides to study overseas, (got scholarship) as an excuse to leave this family as she feels that she does not belong.

(Right spotlight on, with classroom scene and Keith. Anna walks towards the scene and left spotlight dims)
(Hands folded on the table and head resting on it)
Anna: Keith, how would you feel if one day, you found out that you were really adopted, and your parents told you they weren’t your parents, and your family isn’t your real family at all?

Keith (Calmly):It would be difficult to accept, but I would try hard to find out my true identity. I also wouldn’t hate my adopted family, because if it weren’t for them, I wouldn’t be who I am today, right?

Anna: Just what would you say? How would you act? (Take a deep breath) I… I have to tell you this. I…I’m adopted. My mum broke the truth to us recently.
Keith: You are?
Anna: I don’t know how to face my family anymore, after everything that has been revealed, I don’t know what is real, what I’ve been believing in, the life I’ve been living for the past 14 years, or my real identity.

Keith (gently): Keep your emotions in control, reality may be harsher than it seems, but time and maturity will enable you to understand why your adopted family and your real family did what they did.

Anna: Living a lie for 14 years… You wouldn’t understand! You don’t know how it’s like, for everything right under your feet to crumble just like that, in an instant, everything’s gone. You don’t know how it’s like to know that you’re who you are, but then again, you’re really not. (voice breaks) I wanted to believe I was just being led on, but it hurts, how it makes everything perfectly clear now, why mother was always biased, and how Alice must have felt. Just who am I? They lied to me! How can I ever trust them again? Who can I trust? Just a week ago they were my family! (break down and start crying)

Keith(offers tissue and pats her on the shoulder): You know, many times in our lives, things don’t go our way, the trick is to accept reality, don’t worry about the future yet, take one step at a time. (Smiles assuredly)

Let me cheer you up with some good news! Remember the scholarship we applied for? The news was posted and we got in! The trip to London is in less than a month, so you have to decide quickly.

(Alice at one corner emo-ing, inner conflict, while other activities happen at front stage)
Melanie: [with tears in eyes] Anna, take care of yourself okay? Call home frequently and remember to wear enough clothes. It’ll be cold there. Don’t sleep too late also and…
Anna: I’m not a kid anymore. Don’t worry. I’ll be fine
Melanie: I can’t believe that you are leaving at such a young age. Oh, I’m so proud of you! [hugs Anna]
Richard: Don’t forget to take lots of photograph and send them to us. We want to know how you will be doing over there.
Melanie: Exactly. And remember to eat well, sleep well and of course study well. Remember to keep your valuables properly. It may not be as safe there. Don’t forget to bring your jacket with you where ever you go.. Drink lots of water. Eat less fried and unhealthy food. It’s bad for you.
Anna: Fattening too. You must all take care of yourselves as well. Oh, ma! Please don’t cry.
Melanie: Geesh! I’m not crying (wipe away tears) just the dust, the dust. [Looks around] Your friends are here!
Anna: Holly! Kelly! Oh, I’m so glad both of you came! [Face holly] I thought you are supposed to have lessons now?
Holly: I cancelled them so I can come. Oh Anna, I’ll surely miss you [hug]
Kelly: [passes Anna present] just a simple gift for you. Hope you’ll like it. Take care, ya?
Anna: Kelly! There’s really no need for this. Oh, thank you!
(As Anna is leaving the stage, Alice approaches her, embarrassed and sorry for avoiding her)
Alice: I’m really sorry for what happened…
Anna (Cuts her off) Let’s put whatever that happened behind us. (Force smile)
Alice: we’ll keep in touch? (Comforted and relieved)
(Anna nods)

Keith: Come on, Anna. (Smile)

Malenie: Lies, and lies, deception and more trouble! ( Angel part of Malenie is acting up) How can I hide the truth… for so many years…oh Richard…( clung on to Richard ) ( attempts to leave form the table)

Alice: ( in a very sharp tone): Mother, what do you mean by the ‘ truth’ and the ‘years’? Is there something that you did not confess? Out with it, for part of the truth is revealed to us. There is no point in hiding it when the truth is staring blatantly in front of our eyes.

Malenie: Not that I refused to tell you, my daughters ( tries to hug Anna and Alice, crying at the same time) the truth is too hard to bear… you wouldn’t want to know…( moves away from her daughter, leans her head on the wall) ….I can’t tell…I can’t tell…I can’t tell…( mumbled softly) …Anna is the adopted one… she is the adopted one…not Alice…Oh what have I done…what have I done? The first scene was Alice overhearing her parent's conversation while her friends and her sister was playing some where else ( Is it different from our current script?) The second scene was the climax where Richard, Melanie, Anna and Alice were sitting at the table with the " angel' and "devil' part of Melanie behind Melanie and a few friends behind the two sisters. The third scene was Anna at the airport while everyone bade her goodbye tearfully whilst the "angel" part of Melanie was smiling and the " devil' part of Melanie was frowning.
Next, our drama teacher gave us 5 sheets of paper and we were supposed to write 5 scenes on each piece of paper. We were only given 15 minutes at first but it was extended to about 30minutes till recess( I think)
The first scene was when Alice overheard her parent's conversation, the second scene was when Alice had refused to join her sister and her friends in shopping( because she had felt left-out as she thought that she was the adopted one), the third scene was the climax, the dining room scene, where Alice demanded for an answer; the fourth scene ( I can't remember because the group doing scene 4 had not sent me the dialogue yet but I will edit this post if I recieve) and scene 5 was Anna leaving her family at the airport with everything fine and well again.

Hi! I'm here to recount what we did this week for drama (week 7)
Basically, we started off refreshing our minds
by recreating the climax scene and adding more details.

climax

the family of for sat at the dining table.
Alice, the protagonist, is waiting for her mother
to tell her about her supposed adoption.
While Mrs Teo (Malonie Yap), the mother, wavers over telling the sisters the truth.
the scene is tensed, as there was much conflicts
and quarrels in the family previously.
Finally, Alice could take it no longer and blurted out all her hidden emotions,
as well as her misunderstanding.

Did Mrs Teo reveal the truth?

the characters were interviewed on their background,
and were asked to write a short monologue,
either to themselves or to one other character in the developing plot.

Anyways just to re-cap, last week we discussed on the characters and their relationships(:

Main Storyline:

There are 2 sisters, A and P, P is the biological sister, while A is the adopted one. P overhears her mother talking, and comes to know that either P or A is an adopted child. P hates A, mistaking her for the biological child and thinking she is the adopted party, on the other hand, A has no knowlege that she is adopted, and she tries to get along with P and to get her foster mother's love, thinking it is her own mother. P and A share a friend, childhood friend B who grew up with P and A, now, childhood friend B has to decide whose side to stand on, and who to support. She is in a dilemma and confused over who to support. A has another friend, best friend C who is both her classmate and tablemate, they have a strong friendship and best friend C offers advice and help whenever A needs it. Best friend C is the only male in the story(excluding father who is supposedly dead due to a car accident).

Main Characters
P is the biological child of the family, she is currently 15 years old, older than her sister and her objective is to find out who is the adopted child of the two of them. She knows that either she or her sister is adopted, as she overhears her mother in a conversation and heard that one of them is adopted, and hates A, her (adopted) sister, as P thinks that she herself is the adopted child, and hence thinks that she gets less parental love compared to A.


A is the adopted child, she is currently 14 years old, the younger of the sisters and her objective is to get her foster mother's love, being an adopted child, her foster mother has always loved her biological child more than the adopted one. However, as A does not know of the fact that she is adopted, she simply cannot understand why her her foster mother treats her so differently compared to A, as her foster mother is seen as her own biological mother. She is innocent and only wishes to get along with her sister, as well as to have a happy family, a contrasting image to that of her sister.

Character Relationships
P has 2 people supporting her, one is her mother who loves her more than A, and the other is childhood friend B, she is the childhood friend of both P and A, as the 3 of them grew up together.

Childhood Friend B is in a state of confusion as she wishes to support both P and A, but if she helps P, she would be harming A, is she helps A, it would be seen as an act of betrayal by P, hence, she is stuck in the middle, supporting both of them in confusion.

Her mother is the only one in the story who knows the truth; that P is her biological child and A is the adopted child, however, she doesn't reveal anything to either of them, as she doesn't want to ruin things, she does not know that P knows one of them is adopted, and that P thinks she herself is the adopted child.

A also has 2 people supporting her, one is childhood friend B, and the other is Best Friend C.

Best Friend C is a male who is the same age as A, in the same school and class, in addition, he is also her best friend. They sit beside each other in class hence they have a close relationship, and he offers her advice whenever she needs them, always looking out for her like a big brother, or so it seems.

Question Marks ???
We need to decide if Best Friend C is going to introduce romance, whether he knows about P and A's real identities and whose side (Confused) Childhood Friend B is on in the end. She can help A becuase A has pure intentions, but she can also help P to find out the truth in the end, so we need to decide that. Also, we don't know what happened to the father, someone raised a point that he could have died in an accident, would this be related to anything in the story? If not, then it'll just be left as background information(: Oh and, can we please come up with some names?>< It's very difficult to type and remember all the related characters, and our current list of suggested names seems a little funny... Anyways, please suggest some names via tag/post!:D

I remembered Shiyun told me this story last year.

It is about a pair of twins,
one of them had some like of illness,
if the illness is not treated properly,
it would become fatal, and may result in death.
The doctor believed the younger twin is the victim.
So, the parents became over protective over him,
always concerned about his health conditions and safety,
always giving in to him (pampering him),
while the elder brother was neglected.

Once, the younger twin played a prank on his brother,
and pretended to fall off the steps,
claiming that the brother tripped him.
Then, the parents were very angry with him,
and punished him harshly (not sure how...)

After this,
the younger brother started pushing all the blame
for his own mistakes to his elder brother,
and the parents treated the elder twin even harsher,
making him do most of the chores,
while the younger twin relaxed and enjoyed life.

Then some incident happened,
and the doctor discovered that it was actually the
elder brother who is the victim to the illness.
however, due to the harsh conditions he grew up in,
his health deteriorated and his illness worsened.
He eventually died in the end.

Sad story,
it is somewhat related to family,
but I think is more about the tendency of inequality
and being biased to someone,
especially parents towards their children.

Maybe we can change the plot a bit,
or include some of the ideas inside our script?

sorry, but I lost the paper with our 10 issues
I remember some of them were
war
laughter
tradition/religion
epidemic outbreak
mental illness
( pls tell me if you remember the other so that I can add them in.)

the 3 issues we selected out of the 10 are:
1)suicide
2)family
3)friendship

for suicide, we had ruisian as the main character who was about to jump off a building
liyi and I , a couple, were shocked to see what was happening
xinda, a passerby, was calling the police
the others, most likely related to ruisian in one way or another, were persuading her not to jump

family
we broke this issue up into two, happy and loving family VS a family with communication problems

loving family consist of linhui, chiouchyong, xin da and liyi.
the children were playing happily while the parents were behind them watching
the other family consist of me, rui sian, zhu hong, michelle
the parents had an argument and their back were facing each other. The children were very disturbed by what they see.
We chose to construct two scenes as it will show the contrast between the two families

friends
rui sian and zhu hong are good friends. however, the other friends of zhu hong hate rui sian and isolate her. not only that, they tried to make zhu hong stop being friends with rui sian by telling her all the negative side of her, leaving zhu hong very confused.

we had to think of words that are related to the 4 words
and the above is what we came out with

after that we proceed on with making up a story about FAMILY

ONE:
the protagonist of this story is a tom-boyish girl. Her mother wants to make her daughter more ladylike.
[My own idea: perhaps the mother forces her to wear dresses which the girl finds irritating and uncomfortable. so one day the girl could not stand it anymore and broke into an argument with her mother]

TWO:
this story is about 2 sisters. Their character is very different. One of them is very outspoken and outgoing while the other is shy and soft spoken. This shows contrast between the two characters, one strong another weak. As the stronger sister is adopted, the parents show favouritism towards the weaker one. The stronger sister, being ambitious and jealous of her sister (beauty/talent/unfair treatment), tries hard to gain parent's attention and wants to outshine her sister. As she gets stronger and stronger, the other gets weaker and weaker. The weaker sister has a hidden talent, but being outshined by her sister, she is unable to show her talent. This story will be about how the weaker sister manages to show off her talent.

THREE:
main character: mother
the mother wants her pair of twins to be identical, so she bought the similar dresses, make them learn the same things, take up same courses and lessons and more. However, the twins, with different personalities, wanted to be different.
[My idea: one of the twins can be more tom-boyish, another more girly.]

Mdm Oehlers mentioned about our topic leaning towards “IDENTITY” but since she say it is okay, I don’t think we have to worry too much about it

i think that i should start the ball rolling so here's some simple ideas:

silblings vs silblings:

• maybe A has a dark secret and his/her brother/sister found out about the secret. the brother/ sister is supposed to keep the secret a secret but he/she accidentally or purposely spilled the beans to the parents so a "war" erupted between the silblings.


• two contrasting personalities-one strong, one weak. there's this idea of the stronger side feeding energy off the weaker side.

That's my ideas so far. :)
